Information about cleaning Limestone tiles processes
Limestone tiles are a beautiful natural type of flooring which is formed from a rock that makes up about 10% of the sedimentary rock present on the earth’s surface.
Some limestone tiles are more durable than others but they all require thorough maintenance and can be difficult to clean. This type of flooring is usually light coloured (darker shades are rarer but preferred by some), though it is at risk of becoming darker due to impurities like iron oxides and organic materials. Grit brought in from outside the house can cause permanent damage to limestone as can stains from spilled drinks if they aren’t dealt with quickly. Because limestone is calcium-based spillages from acidic drinks like lemon juice can be particularly damaging.
Limestone tiles need to be swept routinely to prevent the build-up of dirt. All limestone tiles should be cleaned regularly with a mild cleaning fluid and then more occasionally with stronger products to keep them in the best condition possible. They can be very difficult to maintain if they aren’t sealed properly, and because of this professional experience is the key when it comes to keeping this type of flooring looking its best.

The cleaning process for limestone floors
Depending on the job at hand we may sheet up, this means that we protect anything that needs protecting before we start adding moisture to the room.
We then test the tiles to make sure they are limestone.
After a good chat with the owner we determine what you want from the clean and the desired finish/look once we leave, whether it be a natural look or enhanced look, shiny or dull, smooth or honed we can offer a variety of finishes.
We begin with the pre-spray, usually a heavy duty cleaner on limestone, this will break up all the soils, especially the soils in some holed limestone which is really hard to clean normally. The next step is the rotary with weight and hard brushes to scrub the soils and heavy duty cleaners, if the limestone is heavily soiled we can boost the cleaning process with some honing powder, this etches into the soils and helps to break them up while we scrub, after the brush scrub we swith to the pad scrub for a different but still very effective clean, after this we use a grout brush on the grout lines and a hand brush for the edges, the nest step is to rinse the floor using our special gecko wand, this wand allows us to jet hot water onto the floor without making a mess and spraying water everywhere. It has a contained head which is surrounded by a rubber squeegee to contain the water, it also has a vacuum attached to suck up all the water which then goes straight back to our van out side. Once floor is dried it is inspected for any soils left, if so we clean again.
Once the floor is thoroughly cleaned and dried we apply a high quality sealer to give the desired finish. This not only protects the floor but help you in your daily maintenance of the floor making it easy to mop and keep clean.
